A good skincare routine does not need ten steps. The most dependable one is usually simple enough to repeat: cleanse gently, use treatment steps with intention, moisturise when needed and protect exposed skin from the sun every day.

Start with your non-negotiables

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a gentle cleanser, moisturiser and broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher as a practical foundation for many people. Your exact needs can vary, but adding more products before this foundation is comfortable rarely makes a routine better.

Step 1: Cleanse without chasing a “squeaky” feeling

Cleanse to remove daily buildup, makeup and sunscreen, not to strip your skin. Use lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser. If your skin feels tight or stings afterwards, the routine may be too harsh or too frequent for you.

Step 2: Treat with one clear purpose

A serum or mask can be a useful moment to support the feel and appearance of your skin. Introduce one new product at a time so you can notice how your skin responds. A mask can be a weekly ritual; it does not need to be used daily to feel special.

If you use a retinoid or retinol product, the AAD advises starting slowly because irritation is common at first. Follow the product directions, avoid piling on several strong actives at once and protect your skin from the sun during the day.

Step 3: Protect in the morning

Sun protection is the daytime step that makes the rest of a routine more thoughtful. Apply broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher to exposed skin and reapply according to the label, especially after sweating or swimming. Skincare cannot replace this step.

A simple NILLY-inspired rhythm

  1. Daily: cleanse gently, then apply your serum to clean, dry skin.
  2. Once or twice a week: make time for a face mask after cleansing, following the product’s instructions.
  3. Every morning: finish with sunscreen before heading outside.

The order is easy to remember: Cleansing Gel → Face Mask → Serum. On mask days, use the serum after rinsing the mask. On non-mask days, your routine can stay beautifully short.

When to simplify or seek help

Pause a product if it causes persistent burning, swelling or a rash. If you are managing a skin condition, severe irritation or a concern that does not improve, a dermatologist can help you choose a safer plan. Education is useful; individual medical care is personal.
